Cancer Screening

Mother brushing teeth with childAt J.B. Dental an in-depth cancer screening is included with each patient exam. Oral cancer risks include tobacco use, alcohol use, sun exposure and contracting the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). With these all too common risk factors affecting nearly every patient in some way, it is important to have your dentist or hygienist check all areas of your mouth including your tongue, cheeks, palate, throat, lips, glands and lymph nodes of the neck. While the following symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is very important to visit our office to rule out the possibility of oral cancer. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity
  • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
  • A lump, thickening, or rough spot
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
  • A feeling of something stuck in your throat

Our goal is to identify oral cancer as early as possible, so please alert your dental professional right away if you have noticed any lump or bump that seems out of the ordinary.
